Ghost Town - Opening night 26.03.2024
Ghost Town came about from a need to make work within specific constraints. I took a brief trip out to Broken Hill, a 2 week stay to break away from the structure of Art School to just make stuff. I knew that I wanted to do film photography and wanted to be able to exhibit work while out there, despite not being able to transport a lot of what I'd usually need for it. Thankfully I stumbled on an article by Aloy Anderson detailing a method for taking photos directly onto film paper, in camera, and then an even simpler method for making 1:1 scale positives.
With an idea for how I wanted to take photographs I still had to work out what with. The physical size of the image is constrained by the negative, so a 35mm camera wouldn't do, and most medium format cameras are prohibitively large, heavy, expensive and prone to break. Thankfully online experiments again helped; I found multiple 3D camera designs and was able to cobble together a functioning cameras within days of leaving.
Reaching Broken Hill these constraints, along with my forgetting a blackout bag, guided the work I made. Without a blackout bag I had to return to my makeshift darkroom to change out each shot, and I wasn't able to fully block out the harsh light, meaning I could only safely shoot during twilight each day.
